There is a question I grew up hearing in church that used to shake me to the core. It would echo through the sanctuary, through sermons and altar calls, through the deep baritone of the preacher’s voice.
“What does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and lose his soul?”
Even as a boy, I knew this question wasn’t meant to be rhetorical—it was meant to haunt, to search you, to strip you down to the marrow of your motives. Back then, I didn’t fully understand its weight. But I felt it. I felt it when I walked across the graduation stage, diplomas in hand, applause in the air—but something in my spirit quietly asked, “And what of your soul?”
I felt it in corporate boardrooms, shaking hands with ambassadors and influential leaders—and yet, in quiet moments, asking myself if Jesus still had my first yes. I felt it when my passport filled with stamps and my résumé with titles and accomplishments. There’s a beautiful, terrifying clarity in that question. It doesn’t demonize success or ambition—it simply demands we not worship them. It calls us to remember that there is a higher kingdom, a deeper calling, and a truer reward than anything this world could offer.
